The North American Soccer League (NASL) has announced that the New York Cosmos Football Club will return to the playing field August of this year. The team dissolved in the mid-1980's due to financial issues and when many of the star players had left after finishing their contracts. For many years people debated whether a soccer franchise could exist again in NYC. In recent times, city football clubs have developed a cult-like following which has helped the resurgence of the sport throughout the United States.
“We’re thrilled to return to the playing field against our historic rivals and take this first step towards returning to the top and delivering the New York Cosmos to the stature and prominence they deserve,” Cosmos COO Erik Stover said. “We've been working as hard as we can to put together the best possible club and we're excited to see this team take the field.”
The Cosmos will start their season off by playing their historically rivaled Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Hofstra University’s James M. Shuart Stadium on Long Island, NY.
