Recent findings from researchers at King’s College in London have found that many of the skin protection topicals that we use against the sun’s harmful rays may only be about half as protective as we think. Published the journal Acta Dermato-Venerology, the study tested two groups of fair-skinned people under Ultraviolet Radiation to mimic a typical 5-day holiday in the sun. What they found was:

  • Most people do not apply enough sunscreen to their skin for it to work effectively

  • Choosing higher SPF numbers will increase the chances of effective protection against the sun (e.g. SPF 50 is better than SPF 30)

  • It is important to use sunscreen in addition to sun blocks such as clothing, umbrellas, and shade to directly block the radiation from the sun.
