Jason Collins the First Openly Gay Professional Athlete

Jason Collins the center for the NBA's Washington Wizards has become the first active professional U.S. athlete to admit is homosexual orientation. The 34-year-old basketball player has a veteran history throughout the NBA, playing on teams such as the Boston Celtics, the Atlanta Hawks, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Memphis Grizzlies, and the New Jersey Nets. In his thirteenth professional season, Collins has declared that 2013 is the right time to come out as the first active professional gay athlete.

His heartfelt story in Sports Illustrated reveals an intelligent and strong man, whose well spoken words place him in a strong and supported position for gay rights. Since admitting his sexual orientation, President Barack Obama, Kobe Bryant, Nike, and the NBA Commissioner, David Stern have all shown strong support for Collins' decision.

Collins' says that he is motivated to promote, “...tolerance, acceptance and understanding” for gay equality both in professional sports and in society.
